This might surprise you.
According to records in 1870 the first pair of Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis jeans were invented and patented. They were used as hardwearing overalls to wear during manual labour.
By 1930 the inventors designed some for women, and were seen in Vogue by 1935.
They were also shown in many western films in the 1930’s.
By 1940 Jeans went global and in the 1950’s the capri pants became popular, in Europe first, but then internationally after Grace Kelly wore them.
Marilyn Munroe and Elvis Presly wore the slim fit ones in the 1950’s and flares became the ones to wear in the 1960’s, which were promoted on photo shoots on models like Jean Shrimpton.
By the 1970’s, the era of the punks, we saw denim jackets and mini or floor length denim skirts.
By 1980 the washed look in jeans was popular with baggy and hip hop styles becoming popular in the 1990’s.
And in 2000 you could actually by ‘new’ jeans with holes, rips and tears in them!!!!
